A round of muted applause, please for Bicycling Magazine, which just won a prestigious magazine-industry award in the public interest category for an article titled "Broken," by David Darlington, which appeared in its January/February 2008 issue.
Unfortunately, the article tells how the laws of the road fail to protect cyclists. It is about a young male rider who was struck by the car of an inattentive driver on a straight stretch of road in Sonoma County, CA. His brain and body were horribly injured and he'll spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. The driver was not hurt and she felt awful about the accident, but she was not charged with a crime.
The young man's "story is a nightmare, its lack of legal accountability an abomination. But it's only one of many such incidents that have occurred throughout the United States," wrote Darlington.
